On Scan is a daily ship identification puzzle for EVE Online players. One hull is picked as the day's unknown contact, and you have six guesses to name it. Every guess you file comes back as a sensor report comparing six attributes — faction, hull class, tech level, top speed, sensor type, and drone bandwidth — against the hidden ship, and each report sharpens the blurred render on the directional scanner.
It is the same shape as a daily word puzzle, but the knowledge it rewards is EVE knowledge: knowing that Minmatar hulls run ladar sensors, that a Command Ship is a battlecruiser hull, or roughly how fast an assault frigate moves. The contact resets at 11:00 EVE time, the same downtime boundary the rest of New Eden runs on, and everyone plays the same ship on the same day.
Type any hull name from the ship database. Each guess returns six attribute comparisons: confirmed, proximity, or mismatch, with arrows showing whether the target sits higher or lower on ordered values like speed and drone bandwidth.
The unknown contact starts as a heavily blurred silhouette and resolves further with every report you file, so a wrong guess still buys you a clearer look at the hull.
After four reports Aura intercepts a redacted lore fragment about the target. Solve it inside six guesses to keep your streak and share your result grid.
At 11:00 UTC every day — EVE Online's downtime boundary. Every player gets the same ship on the same day, and no hull repeats until every ship in the pool has had its turn.
Any published, flyable hull in the pool: Tech I, Tech II, Tech III, faction and pirate hulls, from frigates up to titans. Structures, shuttles, and unflyable test entries are excluded.
The attribute is close but not exact — a faction in the same empire bloc (Angel Cartel against Minmatar, say), a different hull class of the same size, or a numeric value within range of the answer.
No. Anyone can play anonymously and your progress is kept in your browser. Signing in with EVE SSO stores your games server-side so your streak follows you across devices and you can appear on the daily and streak leaderboards.
It is derived on the server from a salted, seeded shuffle keyed to the quiz day, so there is no answer list to find in the page source or the API responses.
